Miami, Key West, and Disney..Oh My! The January 2024 Girls Trip – Day 4 – Key West
Once again, for a little recap, if you missed the earlier posts, This trip came about because a little over a year ago, my cousin, Cara, asked me if I wanted to join her in Key West to complete a half marathon. We flew into Miami, spent two nights exploring the South Beach area, and then headed to Key West for the next portion of our trip and the race. January 13, 2024 – I was awake early this morning, so I walked down Duval Street to The Cuban Coffee Queen to pick up coffee. When I returned, we spent part of the morning hanging out on the porch, drinking coffee, and relaxing. Here are some pictures I took on my morning walk.
After we all got ready, we headed out for the day. We had tickets to the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory mid-morning, so that was our first stop of the day. We spent around an hour admiring and photographing the butterflies and moths of all colors and sizes, as well as the beautiful plants, birds, flamingos, and even turtles that call the conservatory home. We all agreed this place was amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone, and I will return here on a future trip. And sorry for the picture overload, but did I mention how amazing this place was?
Next, we stopped at Key West’s most iconic landmark, the Southernmost Point in the Continental USA marker. This place gets crowded early in the day, and there is usually a line. One nice thing about having multiple people around is you will never have to take a selfie with the landmark, as there is always someone in line to take your picture, especially if you offer to take theirs in return.
After taking our obligatory pictures, Cara and I found a spot on the nearby beach to lay out in the sun, while Sara found a shady spot at the Southernmost Point Bar to relax and have a drink.
Also, I was never so happy to be away from Kansas in January. Look at the temperature difference between the two.
Once we had our fill of the sun, we joined Sara for a drink before heading back to the rental for an afternoon nap.
One of the historic buildings along Duval Street, which was next to our rental.
After recharging and cleaning up, we headed to the runner’s expo to pick up our bibs for our half-marathon in the morning. Then we had dinner at The Waterfront Brewery, where we had Cerviche and Sea Scallops for an appetizer, Salads for the main dish, and tried some delicious local craft beer—views from the restaurant.
After dinner, we stopped at Capt. Tony’s Saloon for drinks. This bar was the original location of Sloppy Joe’s before it moved to its current location in 1937. Then we returned to the rental to call it in early night as we had to be up early for our race in the morning.
